Should you solve others’ problem ? 2 small anecdotes

You shouldn’t listen to airmen’s problems” roared my commander.  I was astonished. Why shouldn’t I?  As a human being is it not my duty to listen to the problems of other humans? “Not at all,” he said, explaining this further he lamented, “I had once made a terrible mistake of listening to

Somebody ought to fix

the problem of Corporal  G K Pandey ( Name changed ).  The complain listening went on for 3 hours.  At the end of this he asked for heavy concessions which I had to concede. Thereafter it became a ritual. Cpl Pandey  used to find the Commander at unusual places  and asked for more and more favours’ and used to add, “Aapko meri  problem to maloom hee hai (You are already aware of my problem , don’t you ? ) “. Thus started an era of exploiting a commander repeatedly for having heard his problem.   This incident was like a big paradox to my young mind and I was not sure, I would experience the ill effect of listening to somebody’s problem like this.

12 years passed, I had forgotten totally about Corporal  G K Pandey . Today came a colleague to my desk.  She appeared troubled. I was busy and she was talking about how we solve the problem of lunch for an employee who had just joined.  She informed me that the person who was handling lunch was on leave.  The new admin guy who had joined had not been briefed about lunch.  Also, the new joinee doesn’t know who she should talk about her lunch. On suggesting that she can share it with any body she said it was not possible. No matter what solution I thought of or proposed, they were shot down like lame ducks in front of carbine fire.  This lunch problem, she had come up was really a very complex one.  No conceivable solution was going to work.  I have with years at work become less interested in solving other people’s problems and stuck to “Things without remedy should be the ones without concern”.  Seeing lack of enthusiasm on my part about this problem, she went away to mull more this problem.  I got back to the work I was on and didn’t care whether the problem still existed or whether she could find a solution. Hours passed and suddenly she came back to me.  She had an interesting update – “She has brought her own lunch “.  The devil in me was rolling on the floor laughing.  The words of my commander were resonating in my head. The times have moved ahead.

Has the behavioural paradigm shifted?  Is there a tectonic shift in wisdom from “Do not listen to others’ problems” to “Do not try to solve somebody else’s problem “.  Are we moving from Icelandic Paropkaris ( philanthropes ) to Ashravankaris ( Non empathisers) to Asahishnus ( Disinterested egoists ) ?

are you still complaining

are you still complaining

What are your experiences of proactively solving somebody’s problems? Did they really make sense?

All-rounders for startups: Be Master of SOME!!!

This post is written by Akash Daniel Boaz , MBA ( Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology). He was earlier working as a network security expert at Infosys for 3 years.  Here he discusses how he quickly donned many hats while interning with Team WiC

Jack of all

How it all Started?

Lady natarani- multitasking

I have always thought of how it would be to work in a startup, how does it feel when you are up against a lot of responsibilities at the same time. Being an Entrepreneurship Cell member at my college, I have often interacted with startups but never had an opportunity to work with them directly.

As you read along you’ll know that it’s been a lot of fun.

My startup journey started few months back as a Consultant at WiC (Where is Cheapest). My initial role was that of a Marketing Consultant. Here we were preparing to create price discovery tool which could cut across  all boundaries. However, after working for a couple of weeks, we realized that leave aside world, even getting great information about lowest prices in Pune is a herculean task.

So, How did we do it? Did we give up ?

I realized that no matter how good a framework is ; for user participation we need good data and for data,  we need some really good feet on street. This prompted me to target hiring a few nimble souls who would extend my eyes and my ears to the market. Thus began my first ever journey of recruiting people. These people would then help me out in covering the most important markets of Pune. I quickly changed my gloves to don one of the most challenging roles of attracting and recruiting some of the brightest people, at the cost a startup can afford. We didnt want to pay 30,000 a month to established job sites or one month gross salary to mushrooming head hunting tribe. We found posted jobs on 12+ free jobs classified site, hit social media like crazy and thought candidates will pour. If you ask me, after first month  of not even a trickle our faith in getting things done free was shaking. I couldnt hire even one. As the new month dawned, we were getting impatient and ready to fork cash we has some bright guys dropping in. Women were still apprehensive of working with a startup and didnt turn up even after committing. I didnt know if  I will be able to hire, then , in a single day we closed most of our positions and even met the gender balance target ;) .  This  ingrained the basics deeply into my neurons.  Results do not come over night. Zero cost hiring is possible, persistence pays and social media works.

One more for the count. Yeh meri manzil nahii…

As I moved further in my primary journey, I realized that for marketing  WiC need some wonderful 1 pager which people would love to preserve at work of art.  I had earlier delved into Graphics Designing,  and I thought making a pager will be a piece of cake for me. I realized that its not just the color or pattern which will work. The essence lay in simplified communication even a grocer should find it hard to resist knowing more about it. Here , just like an actress, less was more.  Few design iterations later came the real test, getting my work incarnate on paper. For the first time, I was interacting with Printers who will print 100s of copies of my work on paper. Shoe strung we covered the breadth of city and discovered that the same page for which I paid Rs 12/ page can be done in Peth area for Rs 3.80  . The constraints of startup were making me wiser. From just creating some good art on to photoshop to now handling full lifecycle of printing, now I am enriched, have better nuances of handling print and yes, the master of elusive art of negotiations. The graphics designer in me has matured.

Why is this story important?

I though of telling you all this because I believe that constraints foster innovation. A startup can only sustain when it’s growing at a rate of 70-100% even when there are severe constraints.  You cannot play any blame game here. You do not have time to wait and delay your growth. You have got an idea, make it count, make it somebody’s favorite solution. Sometimes you might have to go out of the way, out of your comfort zone but when you really do, the resulting  fruits  are  really juicy.  Being a specialist is good but being an all-rounder changes the games. Once you start taking initiatives in your areas of passion, you become a specialist in no time.

The few lines below pretty much sum up my journey at WiC till now:

I began my startup journey

As a jack of all trades

And when the works begun

I realized I was a master of none.

But as time went by

I excelled in several fields

I can definitely say this in the long run

That I had actually become

Jack-of-all-trades and Master of SOME!!!

3 reasons why startups can flirt with woman but struggle at hiring them

I have worked in 3 startups since my career started, and I know how painful it is to hire people in startups, especially female candidates. It has always been a tough job to maintain healthy sex ratio among employees in startup. Sometimes, it’s so difficult that even reaching breakeven point seems to be

Woman not swallowing startup pill

easier. There are some jobs for which female employees are most suitable. It itched my head and longing for the reasons to find out why a female doesn’t want to work in startup.

Reason 1

For this I started asking many of my female friends, like what are their views about working in a startup. One of my friends told me that “I want a risk free standard job with handsome money, which I can get in MNC only.”

My views – I don’t understand why people consider startup as risky job. In fact it is most risk free job, as it takes really long for founders to understand that the new product or service is not going to work out. Also if you adore the product or idea and get passionate you are treated like a blue eyed blonde. If the idea really clicks, you need not worry. You can boast about being a direct connection to likes of Zuckerbergs or Biz Stone So simple J

I have found one interesting blog telling about how startups are risk free (http://www.guglanisam.me/?sort=&search=risk+free)

Reason 2

How will I work among so many men?

This is the biggest mistake women think about. In fact this question has no credibility as you need not have to work really hard if you are the only or

Women at Work

among handful women in office. You will be definitely getting more attention than your peers. But if you believe that if a lady would sneeze, you will find minimum 10 hands with their handkerchiefs, it will be a shock for you. Of course don’t stick to digit 10 as it depends on size of your company. Startup is a fun unlike traditional work environment. People get respect here for their creativity/skill. Gender plays no role.

Reason 3

Is it secure enough to work in such unknown company? I mean I don’t know how the CEO is? I fear if he abuses me physically….

I heard from my colleague, that once one girl came for interview, seeing that the office is in apartment, she ran away from parking only. My answer to above question is – do you think CEO of startups who are tossed by VCs , criticized by family to dare to take different path from other, motivating their employees and proving to the world that he is right and will he  have any more energy left to breach  the security of another person. Come on! Have empathy for him.

There are many more reasons apart from these which I am still exploring.  I would like to end my writing by asking few questions. I know, not all

Helping women . There are always more than she needs

women think like this, but sadly speaking they are very few in number.

  1. Is there any way to convince girls who are not joining due to above myths?
  2. Don’t you think you should give equal opportunity to all companies?
  3. “Hiring a woman” will it still remain a challenge for a startup?

Help me out to seek answers to these questions….

Disclaimer: This has come straight from my heart and please do not take offense to it

Thanks

Startup porn and the dark side of the funding stories in India

We all are blessed with power of imagination. Our capacity to do so, allows us to visualize great products/services or businesses. Some of us are bold (foolish or confident) enough to connect the dots moving forward to make a prototype. What next ? We wish to see it flourish like pinterest, facebook or twitter.   Our beliefs are :

Great idea + Working prototype+decent customer validation = Torrential rain of funds.

To our surprise, we see that cloud of investments does not come on our farms. These spicy stories of million dollar funding and billion dollar valuations are akin to startup porn. What is the reality of glitz behind startup industry specially in India ?

If you are curious, welcome to the dark side of the moon.

Dark side

These 12 small sentences describing what mostly happens after the honeymoon of great idea and prototype. This is not a story of sour grapes but an account of bad apples we encountered till we raised Angel investments from abroad.

  1. We try to pitch to investors/ firms.
  2. Most of them say nice things to us on face. Some will say- “The value of your startup is ZERO ( There is one Rakhi Sawant of startups who has written an epic on why? ) .
  3. They give us a lot of Gyaan. Some time useful (TAM,SAM ,SOM etc) and mostly…. // There are langoors who hangs on all startup events. The first thing they do is : Go into any group, asks what they are trying to do and immediately YELL , “This doesnt work” . No matter what you tell him, he like a parrot will tell you, it doesnt work. Beware this specy will write a BULLSHIT story of an entrepreneur next.
  4. They ask a lot of questions. Some intelligent ones but mostly  ……. a putrid gas like- Has somebody done this earlier? Is this business model proven ?  // Note that business of neither google, nor facebook not IPL was proven.
  5. We pitch more and are asked to prepare  presentations which causes investor erection. Yes , king size erection, ready to jack out his entire wealth. Remember, a VC doesnt grow money in farms. (We  begin brushing/ shining our presentations. No  matter how many hours you put on ppt, it still falls short ).. // Listen to  another gas- “An entrepreneur doesnt do homework.” In fact, most of the times, there is more work done by an entrepreneur than the time an investor has to c0nsume it.
  6. We work more on powerpoint and not on design or code…. There is another pain called elevator pitch which its said is a red pill to funding.  Yes, the elevator pitch helps. Its help is like-  You are in elevator with Angela Jolie and you blurt such a sexy 30 seconder that she will call you to her apartment and bed you in a fortnight. The odds are just that great.
  7. You will refine your already refined excel financial model the 1000th time… Even if its dynamic and even if they agree on all assumptions, they will still disagree with the final value of business. Give them 60% or 70% or 80% discounts on valuation.  // One investor said – He will take upto 80% stake and said he was doing a favor on entrepreneurs to let them work on the idea they are so passionate about.
  8. Pretenders will ask you 1000 questions on how the money will be spent?.. What entry barrier you have created? .. Whats your magic sauce? // Now hear the biggest of all gas – “So what you guys  have patent… It can be twisted, it has no value in consumer space.. Just a point in case – Google paid USD 400Mn to Stanford for exclusive license of software patent.
  9. You give 100 ways on money utilization.. They always scratch their holes, pluck one hair and give you a master piece on how you are wasting money unless you hang yourself from walls and code with your… The Rakhi Sawant of startup says- If I see an emaciated, ugly haired, red eyed guy who had not had sex for ages, I think he is the next Zuckerberg I should invest into. The idea is to look tortured..
  10. Having wasted you precious months on B Plans, competitions, reality shows, you will hear – “Its too early for us .. ” from SUCKERS, who say we have even invested in teams with just a plan on paper. The fart- ” We invest in team- not in idea ” actually means that if you as a first time director can get Tom cruise to act, James Cameroon to direct and A R Rahaman to compose music for you, we will invest. The investment in a team is as likely as that.
  11. You have little choice but to boobstrap ..oops bootstrap your way to sustainability . Then  if you need of money, banks can give you 3 months of working capital.
  12. The investors will then tell, “They want to invest in your business to help it make big”.

If this has left some bitter taste in your mouth , either  shut  the F*** up and build your customers to  rule the world or read some funding porn on Desi immitations of Tech crunch and jack off your startup idea.

Huddle 1.0 – The startup product evaluation event held at WiC office

Startup Huddle Event

One of the reasons why Silicon Valley in USA has been able to churn out so many successful internet products is the presence of a highly conducive environment or ecosystem for startup growth.  While this may mean a multitude of favorable factors like ease of funding, availability of right kind of professionals, design firms etc.  the most important aspect is presence of a large population of early adoptors. These early adaptors provide the innovators the first market validation. They also provide them with a critical and neutral feedback as to where the product fails to meet the intended purpose. The startups like infants need a lot of early encouragement to survive the infant mortality. To make a forward step  Simplibuy Technologies on 31st March hosted a unique event at its office to address this.

The objective of the event is to test drive the products of the participating companies and first appreciate what has been built up Startups

A brief about the event is as follows:

Startups which attended:

A social price repositoryl where people share interesting prices products and stores

A unique travel service which allows people to book a hotel of the choice at the price they want.

A unique collaboration tool which allow people to have discussions and then create tasks to attain team objectives by keeping the communication centralized

A unique job portal which helps startups to attract talent

A job portal which helps people with back logs of exams to get a job

Starting conditions:

Before the start of the event each team gave debrief about the tasks that can be done on their product.

The Act:

The procedure was to test drive others’ product by talking aloud continuously while the actions on screen were being video recorded. The owning team was allowed to observe the test drive without helping any of the teams test driving it. During the evaluation the videos were recorded on Screenr (An application which allows capturing voice of the user while he/she test drives. Each such evaluation took 20 minutes. Every team was given an evaluation sheet which contained known issues, features under development, uniqueness of the product and tasks that can be done using the product. Team which test drives the product must rate the tasks (features) whether it is excellent/good/fair and can add remarks/suggestions if any.

Once evaluation of a product was done by each team, they gave debrief about the issues they encountered and areas where improvements were needed and any features which they liked the most. A representative video is placed here : http://youtu.be/EYOZKYI82AE

Some of the pictures from the event are as follows:

The Start- Collectively we found good things about others

one of the evaluators

Team Symbiois evaluating AtmyWish

The Mojito break- Huddlers lubricate their throats

So much was the value derived from this event that the founders who attended the event decided to make it a monthly recurrence. The event will now be held every month at a different startup’s office.

This event may go a long way in creating a collaborative and mutually helping environment among startups to use each other’s product, admire each other’s good points, help spread the innovative products and also point out the areas of improvement.

If you have a startup with a working application, you can write to event@simplibuy.in to participate.

Are jails in India too sexy ?

While glancing through the Economic times newspaper, I was astonished and amazed to find the occupancy rates of jails in India 2010. The central jails are operating at 118% occupancy and district jails are operating at 130 % efficiency (Please see the graphic below). Seeing that most of the Govt organizations work at 40 – 60% efficiency this is remarkable.

Jail occupancy rates in India

Statistics on Jail occupancy

I was wondering on the following counts :

  1. Has the UPA govt been very efficient in prosecuting people ? // There are so many people in jail now.
  2. Has the crime increased so much that we have jails operating over capacity ? // We see murders, scams, arsons on TV but honestly in last 10 yrs , I have never seen any jail worthy crime with in 2 sq km of my existence. Have you ?
  3. Has the jail life become so comfortable that people do not have any issue making it their vacation home ? // Kalmadi, Kanimozhi, Laloo, Reliance VPs have lived comfortably. Off late we saw Anna Hazare refusing to come out of it ?

While there is no end to wondering about why  jails are working at over capacity, I coincidentally discovered one of the worst jailing experience. This in history of mankind is called Andersonville.  One of the prisoners described it as follows:

A prisoner described his entry into the prison camp:

As we entered the place, a spectacle met our eyes that almost froze our blood with horror, and made our hearts fail within us. Before us were forms that had once been active and erect;—stalwart men, now nothing but mere walking skeletons, covered with filth and vermin. Many of our men, in the heat and intensity of their feeling, exclaimed with earnestness. “Can this be hell?” “God protect us!” and all thought that He alone could bring them out alive from so terrible a place”

While watching movies like Shawshank Redemption or Lock up I felt that there cant be a tougher human predicament than that but the visuals from Andersonville shocked the blood in my veins. Please see the visual of one of the survivors from the jail.

Jail survivor

Surviving Andersonville

Seeing this, I believe, our jails are too sexy a place to go and too important a feat to mention on political resume’ . If we make our jails even 50 % of Anderson Ville, it would drop down corruption from lakhs of crores to may be 100s of crores. If the corruption goes down the prices may drop and may be we will be a better nation.

Do you think this will really work ?

Who are the people in India who need this kind of treatment ?

Is flipkart making profit ?

Reproducing one of the most popular answer on Quora ( For the interest of those people who ask – “What is Quora ? ” )

Is flipkart making profit ?

There are some interesting perspectives before we answer this question :

  1. Is it important to be profitable for flipkart ? : E commerce in India has just reached < 1/10 th of its potential. Out of 120 Crore Indian not more than 1.5 crores use E Commerce frequently.  At steady state it should be at least above 10% which means the market should reach at least 15 Crore users by 2015. At this stage, as long as they keep getting VC money they should continue soaking losses if their transaction volume and userbase keeps expanding. This rationale cannot be understood myopic investors but it does make strategic sense to book losses at this stage when the market itself is underserved and expanding at rapid rate. I explain it in the next point.

    Startups consuming cash

Go ahead , burn the VC money

  2. The street is paved with gold : I remember reading Kim Woo Choong’s autobiography. The former Daewoo Founder, was a newspaper vendor when in teens. In war torn South Korea in 70s, people were crazy and eager for news ( Underserved and expanding). He realised that if he delivers and collects change from each of his customers, he would limit his sale and wont grow. He devised a new approach. He ran along the pavements giving newspaper to each and every person would take and reach the other end of the street fastest. He would collect the money on the journey back. He calculated that even if 5 or 10 people slipped away without paying, hecould make 3 times more profit. This is what this visionary did. Entrepreneurs seemingly lose money initially, but you do not know how they are not. In chess, this is called ‘Sham sacrifice‘, a master, apparently offers to sacrifice a bishop. The amateur bites the bait and goes for it. The next masterstroke then beheads his Queen. Flipkart at this stage may be on this forward pass of delivering. The losses in COD are a tactics from Chess book. This is what bachha investors castigating it will always miss out
  3. Fortifications : The warehousing infrastructure, branding and team that flipkart has been able to create is a huge entry barrier for anyone trying to enter this space. Do you think of any other brand when ordering book as on today.

The simplest way to be profitable is to fire your employees, cut all costs but that is at the cost of speed in growth. In web its the mindshare and userbase that counts. Profits can be done any day its founders want if the customer base is robust. While Shailendra Singh the MD of Sequoia says they regret not having invested in FK, the myopic non investees will keep thumping chest or play pocket polo and cry foul, foul ;)

1 interesting strategy a ceiling fan retailer does about price

Last Thursday during our retailer interaction, we found an exciting pricing strategy by a seller. When we went to his shop, we saw that he had hung MRP on all ceiling fans on display.  When we asked him  if he gives discount on products, he said YES. Its 10 to 30 % depending on the strength of brand ( More established the brand is , lesser is the discount and vice verca ).  I was wondering why was he not displaying discount prominently to attract customers as most shops nowadays do.

When asked, he gave a very interesting explanation. There are 2 kinds of people.

1.Splurging kind : This first kind either has a lot of money or very less time. In both these cases, they do not look at price while buying. They actually do not need discounting. When these kind of people come , there is no use offering any discount to them. They buy at whatever price it sells. When these kind of people buy we make good margins.

2. The frugal kind: These kind of people earn their money hard. They do wise shopping and in most cases survey 3 -4 shops before buying. If we do not give instant discount offers to them , we lose her out to our competitors. To prevent this, we give them great discounts  so that, not only is she satisfied but also goes and tells this to her peer group about it . Her peer group is likely to be a similar value shopper.

This strategy serves 2 ends.

1. It gets as high a margin as legally possible and it comes from people who are ok giving you high profits.

2. It  also allows getting a customer base who want lower prices. This is a kind of customer base which finds out that discount can be obtained. Their ego is massaged when they feel they have been  a smart buyer. The seller can yield depending on the persistence of the buyer. The more, the seller yields, the more delighted, the buyer gets about her shopping intelligence or bargaining capability.   More is her delight, more is the likelihood of her chirping about it and more will be customer foot fall.

The things  in this strategy are subtle but this strategy gets a good balance between profitability and customer acquisition and also between keeping a rigid pricing approach or a flexible one.

There goes a popular Ad for Tata sky- ” Poochne mein kya jaata hai ? ”

So when shop, do you buy at sticker price or ask for a discount ?

So what kind of a buyer are you ?

If you are of the second kind , how do you  break the price most ? // If you share this , a lot of first kind can be helped..

The Grass is greener on my side @ WiC

While we always believe that other person’s company pays better, neighbour’s wife is more beautiful and so on, there are some moments in life when we discover that what we have got is the best. Nitesh Sahu, an MBA interning with us shares his thought on his experiences at WiC

Life throws good surprises

What hooked me up with WiC ?

The very first day when I entered the WiC Office, I had a meeting with the Management team. During this meeting, hearing the insights on the business and vision of WiC, I got instantly excited to know more about the company. I was happy with the openness in company culture and spirit of knowledge sharing prevailing in team WiC.

What fires me up in a typical day ?

A typical day at WiC begins with Scrum (A Standup meeting to get everyone on the same page) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_(development)

The Scrum begins with discussing the events across the globe and their relevance to WiC. For about 2 minutes the discussion stimulates our mental software to gear up for top performance during the day. This rejuvenates everybody with positive energy. Once that’s done each one of us answers three questions:

  • § “What did I accomplish yesterday?”
  • § “What  am I planning to accomplish today?”
  • § “The problems/stumbling blocks  which prevent me from being productive on my task?”

Not only I get connected with everyone in team, I also get to know what excites everybody at work today.  In MNCs or bigger functional organizations, they cast your roles and responsibilities the day  you join them.  Here at WiC, I was asked what was I most passionate about.  I am happy, I was given an opportunity to align myself to the responsibilities based on my area of passion. Further I came to know that WiC culture is based on simple principle of giving professionals freedom to pursue one’s areas of passion and produce world class deliverables.  When you are plugged into your passion, not only you work efficiently but enjoy every moment of it.

Whats so exciting about WiC ?

To my surprise, the theoretical concepts that we just read and learnt in MBA (1st Year) was being practiced effectively at WiC. We are actually using some of the best tools and techniques which unleash creative thinking ( Free Mind Software for Mind Mapping).  Screenr is another tool we use for extreme usability testing. Pomodoro technique and  its software  to gain tremendous focus. Collaborative tools like Communication tracker are used to foster discussions and convert them into actionable tasks). These make the organizational processes smooth and fast. This is not the end, after this everyday WiC team shares various other ideas which can radically transform businesses and user experiences. Everybody is encouraged to experiment and explore these. Through this sharing everybody tends to learn fast and utilize these tools in their day to day work to make their life easy and be as productive  as possible.

The punch line of WiC which states that “Search Share &Ask” is the best example emphasizing the need of sharing.

How does WiC tap into my passion and strength ?

Since I am passionate about International Business Development, I was tasked to work directly with CEO on the standardization of the WiC processes globally. This means, I had to tune the design data acquisition process in Pune in such a manner that it can be easily replicated in any  other city globally. I am handling the process in Pune region and simultaneously interacting with another associate of company in Singapore. This  person has 9+yrs experience in product management and presently pursuing his MBA from INSEAD. At  Singapore he is also designing similar strategy to market the product to retailers.  Its great to work in multicultural teams and see how people across the globe are realizing the value WiC can bring. I am happy to make a difference to a process which will seed implementation in another global cities. The mutual interactions and learnings with him have been phenomenal.

What difference am I making ?

WiC is backed by Indian & American Investors who have a vast experience in hi tech business product development. Investors meet once in a week over screen sharing call to decide on fine tuning company strategy. The discussions during these meeting are focused on ideas to get maximum market penetration and get most of the affiliation from various stakeholders. The idea is to create an ever improving resource for  product, stores and prices. This I believe is the heart, soul and philosophy of our product. These meeting are the most crucial one and everyone has to do the ground work from his/her side before the meeting so that meeting times are spent exploring better solutions and ideas. Telecall with screen sharing makes us feel we are in the same room. To keep the investors happily engaged is the prime motto of every business . I remember how I helped improve the weekly investor report so that not only they can see the data but they can also see the trends, the areas of concern clearly in visual way. I used all the excel skills I had learnt till date to redesign it.  The investors were very happy with the report improvement and its layout.  This has now become a standard format for reporting  metrics at WiC. I got a lot of appreciation for the same and this motivates me to discover more ways to add value.. Happy to have left a footprint

Am I having a great time at WiC ?

The above scenario itself indicates that at WiC your ideas are heard, evaluated,  quickly implemented and you get the credit for it. So I believe, the transparency, the culture and the confidence that Team WiC displays undoubtedly makes WiC an outstanding place to work at. Without any second thoughts I can say that I am having a good time at WiC. You can check some of the pics on https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.336535689739575.77416.117726174953862&type=3 . I am not only having a great learning experience but also enjoying my work at the same time. The grass, this time is definitely greener on my side.

The best thing a person learns in MBA – It depends

Learnings

MBA power

I heard this from one of my friends. He was talking about a person who had completed his MBA from one of the IIMs.  He asked him what is the most important thing he learnt during his MBA . He summed it beautifully like this -

“Earlier , when people used to ask me questions, I used to give answers on the basis of my knowledge, experience and thought. After completing my study, now if anyone asks me anything, my answers is – It depends

Yesterday we did our first ISP ( Independent Study Project ) on how retailers view a concept like that of WiC. Incidentally, it’s a kind of product they would hate if they are making huge profits on retailing.  We walked into a swank watch showroom on a premium business district. We could quickly het introduced to the decision maker. After briefing about the purpose, we tried to engage him  in a conversation.

WiC :  What is unique about your shop ?

Shop Mgr : It depends ….. ( Pauses .. )

WiC : Do you pass on any price benefits or value to  end customers ?

SM :  It depends ….. ( Looks emotionless .. )

WiC : What is the average footfall in your shop ? ( Actually, this question shouldnt have been asked )

SM :  It depends ….. ( Wickedly felt good his formula works .. )

WiC : Would you like the consumers interested in premium watches know something special about your shop ? …

SM :  It depends ….. ( By this time you must realize how hard my education has been  .. )

When people read people, they are also being read and will probably be read about. In life we to continue to deal with patterned species of multiple kind. This pattern really amused us.

What are the other stereotypes you have observed among people ?

How has their education, experience or upbringing reduced them to an object of predicable caricaturing ?
